I am not going to pretend that I am an expert about Messianic congregations or that I have some hot-shot degree in theology, but I’ve grown up attending Messianic synagogues and attend a private Christian school and I often times find myself refuting these common myths about Messianics:
1) Messianics rely on their salvation based on celebrating G-ds appointed times and following Old Testament law.
Nope! They observe the law because it points us to Yeshua.
2) We don’t belive in the gospel message.
Refer to point one.
3) Only Jews can be Messianic.
Jew and Gentiles are both a part of the Messianic church with the belief that both races are one in G-d’s eyes.
4) All Bar/Bat mitzvahs are at the age of 12/13.
Though this is often true, many Messianics are Bar/Bat mitzvahed at a later age.
5) All celebrations come out of the Torah.
Several of the feasts and festivals that are observed are in the Torah but a select few are tradition based such as the festival of lights Chanukkah.
6) Nothing aligns with Messianic synagogues and Christian churches.
False, quite a bit of Christian church doctrine aligns with the Messianic church. Mainly (and most importantly) the Gospel message aligns with Messianic and Christians alike. The difference is that Messianics believe the Torah is applicable today while Sunday church goers tend to pick and choose what they want to apply to today while mainly choosing the Ten Commandments as the only set of “laws” to follow today.
Yes, there are differences but often times both sides finds the flaws in the other church and don’t look at the positives that each side of the Christian church has. If you have doubts about a particular denomination in the Christian church I encourage you to visit a service and possibly meet with an elder, pastor, priest, or rabbi, and debunk the possible myths that you may have about that church.
